Coconut oil has got to be the best thing since distilled water. Seriously, it is a must have beauty, medicine cupboard and food cupboard essential and I couldn't live without it. I thought I'd write a nice little post on here about it being as I'm constantly singing it's praises to colleagues, clients, relatives, friends... Basically anyone I come into contact with really. When you buy a jar of coconut oil, what you are really buying is a jar full of endless potential. A hundred products in one. It's amazing and I have put together a clear and concise list of all of its wonderful uses below.

* Primarily, coconut oil is great for frying as it has a high smoke point and doesn't lose it's nutrients as you heat it up like other oils do. It's great for baking, stir-frys or as a dairy free replacement to butter. I also add it to my curries quite often for a bit of added flavour and goodness.
* It's great in smoothies daily to boost your energy.
* I have never done this personally but I have read in multiple places you can use it as a 'coffee creamer'.
* You can make homemade mayo with coconut oil using vegetable oils alongside it.
* Ingesting coconut oil supports healthy thyroid function.
* It is high in Lauric acid and MCFA (medium chain fatty acids) content so helps to boost your metabolism (in other words - it helps you to lose weight).
* There is some studies and evidence that suggests ingesting coconut oil can prevent Alzheimers.
* Nursing Mum's can take 3-4 spoonfuls a day to boost nutrients and increase milk supply.
* Mix with chia seeds for an energy boost.
* It helps balance insulin levels if you ingest it daily which will help prevent insulin drops and sugar cravings.
* It helps balance cholesterol ratios.
* It has been shown to increase calcium and magnesium absorption when added to one's diet.
* Ingesting it daily can help with any allergies.
* Pregnant women taking it internally can help ensure their babies are getting all their essential fats for development.

* You can use it to make homemade body lotions either on its own or with other ingredients. I like a 50/50 mix of coconut oil and aloe vera gel to drench myself in directly after a bath or shower. I adore coconut oil alone as a moisturiser, not only has it got a natural SPF of around 4, but it also improves the elasticity of your skin helping to prevent stretch marks and scars. Some people have told me that it dries their skin out but you are welcome to mix it with other oils such as pure argon oil or olive oil. My cousin likes to mix frankincense, coconut oil and olive oil for his body moisturiser and he said it keeps his skin super hydrated throughout the whole day. I don't use coconut oil every night as a moisturiser but when I do, I wake up with my skin feeling super smooth and soft.
* Make-up Remover (eye & face) - I use coconut oil and water wipes to remove my make-up now. It all stemmed from using the body shops chamomile balm to remove my make-up. Then I realised the consistency is much like that of coconut oil and being that the body shop's chamomile cleansing butter will set you back thirteen squids! I think it's more worthwhile getting something you can use elsewhere too. Anyway all I do is rub the coconut oil all over my face, let it sink it and wipe it all off with cotton pads, I then repeat with water wipes and then cleanse with pure aloe vera and tea tree gel.
* Coconut oil makes a great eye cream. I usually wouldn't recommend using anything this close to your eyes, least of all on your undereye as you have the thinnest layer of skin (fun fact the skin on your feet can be up to 6mm thick yet around your eyes it's as thin as 0.5mm). It lightens age spots also which is helpful for anyone suffering with any dark patches.
* You can use it as a massage oil. Either as a carrier oil with any aromatherapy oil of your choice or simply on its own it works great also.
* A tiny pea sized amount rubbed into your hands and over your hair will help you get rid of frizz
* Face/ Body Exfoliator - I like to make a nice little scrub out of coconut oil. I usually add sea salt or brown sugar with a few drops of almond oil, sometimes I also add honey and a squeeze lime in to it. If I still lived close to a sandy beach I would mix coconut oil with fresh sand collected from there too. If I have the time I like to rub the mixture onto my whole body with dry skin,  then rinse with warm water then blast with cold water after so take away any stickiness. I learned about the process of using hot and cold water to purify the skin in Marrakesh, Moroccan hammams use the process of hot and cold water to open and close pores to cleanse and purify them. It really works and having a routine like this makes you feel extra pampered afterwards.
* You can make your own toothpaste with coconut oil as it helps to re-mineralise the teeth. Either mix it with bicarbonate soda or turmeric. You can also add a bit of peppermint oil for taste if you wish. I only started doing this recently but I do love it as a whitening treatment also.
* It is a great mouth Rinse/Wash - If you ever find yourself without your toothbrush, or even if you don't swishing coconut oil around your mouth or any oil in fact, is proven to give your teeth and mouth a thorough cleanse. They call it 'oil pulling'. The main benefit of doing this is to remove bacterium from the mouth and thus make it a cleaner, better place to be a mouth :)... It is proven to both whiten teeth and improve breath too!
* You can use it as a natural lip balm to help heal dry lips.
* It is great as an incredibly intensive natural hair conditioner/mask. Rub it into dry hair, put a shower cap on and leave for several hours or overnight and then rinse and clean your hair. I also like to massage it into my scalp as this alone stimulates the cells and encourages hair growth.
* Oil Pulling. Every morning, I'll put a tablespoon of coconut oil in my mouth. At first this was hard and I nearly gagged as the texture seemed weird and gross, but now, I am used to it. I leave it in there for 20 minutes or so and swish it around. It is key to NOT SWALLOW the coconut oil when doing this because, it draws out all the toxins in your body and you do NOT want to swallow that. I have been using as a method to whiten my teeth recently, but also as a method to keep my wisdom teeth cleaner as I have a lot of issues with those most recently. It is very good for gum health and mixed with turmeric it can whiten you teeth and oregano to strengthen your gums.
* It can help reduce the appearance of varicose veins.
* You can use it as a natural shaving cream or aftershave lotion.
* It is gentle enough to be used as a baby lotion.
* Use it as a hand and nail cream. Rub it into your nails and cuticles to stimulate nail growth.
* Use it for cracked, dry and sore feet as it makes a wonderful foot treatment.
* Highlighter: I found myself caught out with no highlighter at a friend's house the other day and we wanted to get spruced up and looking pretty for a nice meal, so I used a little bit of coconut oil. I will be throwing out my drugstore highlight and swapping it because, not only does it minimise more chemicals on my face, it looked much better and is also completely cruelty-free and plant based.

* My sister has just had a baby and coconut oil is a safe and effective diaper cream
* Coconut oil can help increase sun tolerance and prevent burning. So you can use it as a sun protector (I would recommend using it alongside a natural sunscreen also just to be extra safe). It has an SPF of 4 which is said to block out approximately 75% of UV rays for 45 minutes of sun exposure. I am the palest person I know and I used this in Malta a few years ago and didn't get burnt once so there is a lot of truth in this. I have also read a lot of sunscreen bottles in my time and they're toxic so natural food SPF protection like that in coconut oil is definitely the way forward.
* If you do happen to get sunburn - coconut oil can help you heal that!
* Coconut oil can help to get rid of cradle cap on a baby - just massage it into the head and leave it on for a few minutes then gently rinse with a warm washcloth.
* Coconut oil can be used topically to kill yeast or yeast infections. If you have had to take antibiotics you have probably experienced thrush. Gosh knows, if you're a women you have probably experienced thrush. I had a spell of this over a year and a half ago (I haven't used antibiotics since this episode and don't plan on using them ever again) and I used coconut oil as a replacement for clotrimazole cream (otherwise known as canesten). It kills candida and relieves the area of any discomfort and itching. I also found it to be far more soothing than any of the over the counter creams. I also took an acidophalus suppliment alongside using the coconut oil and a sort of slow release, natural versiion of fluconazole. It worked and all without having to put any nasties in my body!
* Topically it can help your skin heal faster after injury or infection. I, for example use it on burns.
* You can use it in place of Lanolin cream on dry and irritated nipples when breastfeeding.
* It can help soothe psoriasis and eczema.
* Rub coconut oil on the inside of your nose to help alleviate allergy symptoms.
* It has anti-inflammatory properties can help lessen arthritis.
* It can reduce the itch o mosquito bites.
* It can help resolve acne and scarring from acne when used regularly - I have seen this for myself!
* I have read about people using it in their children's ears to help speed ear infection healing.
* A tablespoon melted into a cup of warm tea can help sooth a sore throat.
* It can help sooth the itch of chicken pox or poison ivy.
* The beneficial fats in coconut oil can help with depression and anxiety.
* You can mix it with peppermint, eucalyptus or menthol for a homemade vapor rub.
* It can relieve the pain of hemorrhoids when used topically.
* It can boost circulation and help those frioleras like me who often feel cold.
* It naturally clears up cold sores.

* As I said earlier in this post it is a great massage oil or carrier oil if you want to add some essential oils.
* and it is the best personal Lubrication you'll ever find. This is slightly saucy and maybe TMI for my blog but, we're all adults here right? So I digress - Coconut oil feels and does great things for 'down there'. I'm not going to go into detail here but all I am saying is, it does not contain the nasty chemicals that KY gel or durex do, It will not give you cystitis or any discomfort, it doesn't mess with the natural vagina flora and it will feel blooming amazing for you both.

* If your pet is struggling with any skin or hair issues, it can be used externally to help heal them back to good health.
* If your pet is constipated, mix a bit of coconut oil into their food to help them out in a gentle way.
* You can use coconut oil in homemade dog treats.

I hope this blog post was informative and helpful to at least one person. I find myself so overwhelmed with all I have to say about coconut oil that I thought I would just write it on here and send people this way so they can see how fantastic it is for themselves!
